While referring to Cameroon as ‘Africa in miniature’ has become a bit of a cliché, this statement certainly rings true: everything you would expect from the African continent seems to be consolidated in this diverse slice of land. The south boasts tropical rainforests and deserted golden beaches; the northern parts are awash with great expanses of desert, lakes and savannah; volcanic mountains dominate the southwest and northwest, and game-viewing areas scattered throughout the country offer ample opportunity to observe impressive wildlife, including elephants and lions.

Cameroon’s tourist trade is a victim of geography. It sits in a tough neighbourhood, bordered by some problematic countries. But this shouldn’t position you off, as Cameroon real­ly has impartial around everything a traveller could want. One of the most culturally diverse countries on the continent, its multitude include ancient tribal kingdoms, Muslim pastoralists and forest-dwelling pygmies. the landscape is no less dizzying in its diversity. Mt Cameroon (4095m) is the highest peak in West Africa and attracts plenty of trekking interest. A still-active volcano, it rises almost uncurved from the sea in a spectacular manner. Further north are the rolling grassfields of the Ring Road area, while the Mandara Mountains are a complete contrast again – dry and rocky, with isolated villages eking out a living.
